Privacy Group Urges Ireland to Drop Encryption Backdoor Law
The Global Encryption Coalition (GEC) is urging Ireland to abandon its proposed Communications, Interception and Lawful Access Bill, warning it could weaken digital security and expose citizens and businesses to cybercrime risks. The draft legislation, which remains in early development, seeks to grant law enforcement access to encrypted messages—a move privacy advocates argue WOULD create systemic vulnerabilities.
Ryan Polk of GEC emphasized in an open letter that undermining encryption threatens both privacy and security, leaving gaps for malicious actors to exploit. Ireland’s position as a European tech hub could also be at stake if the bill progresses, with the coalition calling for rejection of the EU Chat Control proposal on similar grounds.
